But cinematic slow motion isn't a filter you switch on. Getting it smooth, sharp, and intentional takes an understanding of frame rates, the right shooting technique, and the right gear. This guide walks through all three.

How Slow Motion Actually Works

Slow motion isn't created by filming slowly — it's created by filming more than you need, then playing it back at a normal speed.
A camera capturing high frame rate video records more frames per second than it will ultimately display. When that footage plays back at a lower frame rate, each second of real time stretches across more frames, and the action appears to slow down.
Footage shot at 120 frames per second and played back at a standard 30fps will appear four times slower than real life. No frames are skipped, no motion is faked — the slow-down comes purely from the surplus of information captured while filming.

Shoot at the highest practical frame rate. You can't manufacture smooth slow motion in the edit from footage that wasn't captured with enough frames to begin with.
