What Causes a Meteor Shower? (And Why the Perseids Are Special)

A meteor shower happens when Earth passes through a trail of dust and debris left behind by a comet. As these tiny particles slam into our atmosphere at tens of thousands of miles per hour, friction burns them up in a flash of light — the "shooting stars" we see from the ground.
The Perseid meteor shower comes from debris left by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, an icy body that circles the sun roughly every 133 years. Every summer, Earth crosses through this debris trail, and the result is one of the most reliable meteor showers of the year.
