The main difference lies in stability, portability, and footprint. A tripod provides maximum stability for long exposures and hands-free shooting, but it is bulkier and takes longer to set up. A monopod (or one-legged stand) is highly portable, lightweight, and ideal for fast-moving action like sports and wildlife photography. It assists with weight distribution and reduces camera shake while allowing you to move quickly in crowded spaces where tripods are restricted.
A dedicated video monopod features a fluid head for smooth panning and tilting, which is essential for capturing professional, cinematic footage without jitter. Additionally, high-quality video monopods, like SIRUI’s professional lineup, come equipped with a panning base with feet (feet stabilizer) at the bottom, offering extra pivot control and smoother 360-degree rotation that standard photo monopods lack.
For travel photography and outdoor shooting, a carbon fiber monopod is highly recommended. Carbon fiber is significantly lighter than aluminum, absorbs vibrations better, and is more comfortable to handle in extreme cold or hot weather. However, if you are on a budget, an aluminum monopod offers excellent durability and heavy-duty load capacity at a more affordable price point.
Generally, standard monopods cannot stand on their own and always require you to keep at least one hand on the camera. However, SIRUI’s monopods with feet (modular design) offer a stable 3-leg base that allows them to stand independently under light loads. Note: For safety reasons, especially in windy conditions or with heavy DSLR/mirrorless camera rigs, we always advise maintaining a grip on your gear.
Ideally, your camera monopod should extend close to your eye level when the camera and head are mounted, so you don't have to hunch over while shooting. When it comes to weight capacity (payload), you should choose a monopod that can support at least 1.5 to 2 times the total weight of your heaviest camera body, telephoto lens, and video head combined to ensure optimal stability and safety.
